Slow play is one of the biggest enemies of professional and amateur golf alike.  Golf takes way too long to play and that’s one reason why golf rounds are on the decline and why the game is losing more players than it is gaining.  Nobody in this busy time we live in has time for a 5-6 hour round of golf.

Tiger Woods, while answering questions about his tournament coming up in December, the Chevron, cited his solution for solving the issue on the PGA Tour.

Hit slow players in the wallet.

“Just start fining guys.”

Sounds great, but not sure that such a simple solution will find much traction.  The Tour does, very rarely, penalize players for slow play.  The penalty is in the form of strokes, not dollars.  Penalizing strokes may however, indirectly impact the player’s wallet.  But once again, these are very rare cases.

Amateur golfers see pros playing slow, lining up putts from 25 different angles, and think that’s what they should do.  Perhaps if the pros sped things up, amateurs on the local muni courses would follow?

At least the discussion is taking place.
