Golf Rules: When Play is Completed

by Jeremiah Bohannon on Oct 15, 2012
[caption id="attachment_2177" align="alignright" width="150"] Ball OB or in the hole?[/caption] Here's an interesting bit of rules discussion.  Today we are going to talk about situations where the ball has gone in the hole, but the player(s) are not aware that it has done so.  We will look at stroke play and match play situations. Stroke Play Let's say that a player is playing a dogleg par-4 hole.  The player's 2nd shot to the green is a blind shot.  He hits his 2nd shot, but cannot see it finish.  A search around the green is fruitless.  No ball found.  The correct procedure in this situation for a "lost ball" is to go back to the previous shot location, drop under penalty and hit another ball.  This would mean the player is then hitting his 4th shot from that location. After hitting the 4th shot onto the green the player putts to the hole, then sees a ball in the hole.  It was his first ball.  What is the ruling?  He was putting for 5 or 6 with the 2nd ball. When a ball comes to rest in the cup, the hole is concluded.  Therefore, the playing of the 2nd ball was nullified as the hole was over.  The score in the above situation is a 2. Match Play In match play two players are playing a similar hole as above.  Player A hits an approach shot to the par-4 and never finds it.  He drops a provisional, or ends up going back and playing the 4th shot onto the green and has 30 feet for bogey.  Player B does not lose a ball, but ends up taking four shots to get his ball onto the green and is also about 30 feet away.  Both players lag their putts up to three feet and concede each other's putts.  They tie or "halve" the hole.  It is then discovered that Player A's original golf ball was in the hole.  What is the ruling here? Once again, the hole is concluded when the ball came to rest inside the cup.  Therefore, Player A won the hole immediately after Player B's 2nd shot did not go in the hole.  Despite the fact that the players agreed to halve the hole, Player A actually won it. Rules can be fun and interesting, no?
