PGA Results: 2012 WGC Bridgestone Invitational

by Jeremiah Bohannon on Aug 05, 2012
WGC Bridgestone Invitational The top players in the world were in Akron, Ohio for the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at the South Course of Firestone Country Club.  This "World Golf Championships" event is one of four such events contested during the season. Jim Furyk opened the tournament with a fantastic 63 and followed that up with a 2nd round 66 to hold a large lead.  A 2nd round 70 kept him in the lead, but the field crept closer.  In the final round, Keegan Bradley and Steve Stricker surged with 64's (-6).  Despite firing a final round 66, Tiger Woods was not a factor at any point during the week. Bradley was in the final group with leader Furyk, who until the last hole held onto a one shot lead.  An errant approach on the 18th for Furyk left a very awkward pitch over sand which was not executed well.  Meanwhile Bradley had a plugged lie in the greenside bunker.  Bradley was able to get up and down for a great par save, while Furyk made a very sloppy double bogey, handing the victory to Bradley. After blowing the lead in the U.S. Open and now the WGC Firestone, it will be interesting to see how Furyk responds this coming week at the PGA Championship, and the rest of the season. PGA Tour - Reno/Tahoe open While the WGC event was going on in Ohio, the rest of the PGA Tour was in Lake Tahoe for the Reno/Tahoe Open at Montreux Golf and Country Club.  The format for this tournament is a modified stableford, where higher numbers are better. John Daly had a great tournament, scoring 33 points and finishing in the top five. In the end, the biggest point scorer was J.J. Henry, who took home the victory with 43 total points. Champions Tour The seniors were in Blaine, Minnesota this past weekend contesting the 3M Championship at TPC Twin Cities. German Bernhard Langer had a fantastic final round Sunday.  His incredible round of -10 (62) leapfrogged (pun intended) the field and vaulted him into victory lane. The closest competitor finished two shots back.  Langer rode hot ball striking and excellent putting to the victory.  He led the field in greens-in-regulation at 88.9% and putted to an average of 1.625 putts per GIR. Players stunned and left in the dust by the amazing 62 included David Peoples who entered the final round with the lead, and Kenny Perry who was two shots back with a fine final round 64.
