PGA Results: 2012 Wells Fargo Championship

by Jeremiah Bohannon on May 06, 2012
PGA Tour The Wells Fargo Championship was a very fun tournament to watch this past weekend.  It looked like Webb Simpson would notch a victory coming into Sunday.  He held a one shot lead and until yesterday had never lost when leading coming into the final round.  In the end Simpson had to birdie the 18th for a score of -14 to enter a playoff.  He missed. Three players did finish at -14: Rory McIlory, D.A. Points and Rickie Fowler. On the first playoff hole D.A. Points hit a fantastic drive which he nervously watched until it was safe in the fairway, some 300 yards from the tee.  Rickie Fowler teed off next and blew his driver past Points by about 20 yards, also in the fairway.  World #2 (at that time) Rory McIlory showed off his massive power as he blew his three wood some 50 yards past points and 25-30 yards past Fowler.  But the saying of the day coming out would soon be "drive for show, wedge for dough." Points, no doubt jacked up on adrenaline, blasted his wedge long and had a near impossible up and down from the back left fringe to a front left pin.  He would save par with about a 15 foot putt.   Fowler chose a 51 degree gap wedge for his approach and hit a fantastic shot which finished about four feet short left of the hole, in a perfect position.  Unexpectedly McIlory hit a very so-so approach which left him a super fast birdie putt from about 30 feet away.  McIlory was unable to get his birdie putt inside of Fowler's approach, but did make his par putt. The stage was open as Fowler had the final putt which would secure his first victory on the PGA Tour.  Draino.  After the win Fowler commented, "now I've got some credibility." Having finished in a tie for 2nd place, Rory McIlory moved from #2 in the world rankings back to #1.  He now holds the #1 ranking for the 3rd time. Champions Tour Fred Funk had a chance to do something only a handful of players have done.  At The Woodlands, Texas Funk was trying to win a Champions Tour event on the same course he'd won a PGA Tour event years before.  Back in 1992 Funk won the Shell Houston Open at The Woodlands. It came down to the final hole, the last shot.  Funk and Tom Lehman were tied for the lead.  Funk hit a fantastic 5-iron over water which finished some 12 inches from the hole.  The tap-in birdie gave Funk a one shot victory, his first win since 2010 and the first since having two thumb surgeries. Funk called the 5-iron one of the best shots he'd ever hit, including his putt to win The Players Championship in 2005. Speaking of The Players and now that we are done wrapping up the weekend, it is time to move on to Players Championship week!
