PGA Results: 2012 Wegmans LPGA Championship

by Jeremiah Bohannon on Jun 10, 2012
LPGA Tour (Wegmans LPGA Championship, Locust Hill CC, Rochester, NY) 22 year old Shanshan Feng came from a three shot deficit to become the first player from mainland China to win on the LPGA Tour, let alone a major championship.  Feng fired a final round 67 to leapfrog the field and record the major victory.  Runners up included Mika, Miyazato, Stacey Lewis, Suzann Pettersen and Eun-Hee Ji.
"I would say first of all I'm really, really, happy that I won the tournament. I still can't believe it. I think after this week it's going to give me a lot more confidence. I believe I can win again in the future. And hopefully it's going to help golf in China because I want to be (tennis star) Li Na for golf in China. I want to be like a model that the other juniors can follow my steps and get on the LPGA." ~Shanshan Feng
Champions Tour A constant rain made play difficult in the final round of the Champions Tour's major, Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek.  Chien Soon Lu and Bernhard Langer put up a good fight but couldn't catch Tom Lehman, who won his 2nd Regions Tradition by two shots.  Lehman shot all four rounds in the 60's.
"I don't mind any condition other than rain.  I don't like playing in rain. It makes me really uncomfortable. I just feel like I lose the rhythm of my swing. "Today was a real test of perseverance, just trying to move the ball forward. Don't try to bite off too much, don't get too aggressive. Just play shots I know I can hit."  ~Tom Lehman
PGA Tour Rory McIlory had the lead at several points in time this past week at the PGA Tour's FedEx St. Jude Classic.  He had entered the tournament to try and find a spark for his troubled game before this week's U.S. Open.  It seemed he had the spark, but for a few mistakes with eventually cost him a chance at victory.  The biggest mistake would be putting his tee shot in the water on the final hole of the tournament when a birdie would put him into a playoff. Coming off of a back injury sustained while lifting a Jet Ski, bomber Dustin Johnson used fantastic ball striking and high greens in regulation to win in only his 2nd week back from injury.  Johnson hadn't even picked up a golf club for six straight weeks while in rehab for the back injury.
"I knew out here I just needed to get the ball in the fairway.  Because I was swinging my irons well, I knew I was going to have a lot of looks at birdies." ~Dustin Johnson
No player has won the U.S. Open who won the previous week in the history of the Tour. Can Dustin Johnson be the first?  Ball striking is crucial in U.S. Open conditions and if he can continue that trend he has a good chance.
