PGA Results: 2012 Toshiba Classic

by Jeremiah Bohannon on Mar 18, 2012
PGA Tour The Transitions Championship looked like a leaderboard of old for a few days.  Ernie Els and Jim Furyk were fighting it out for the lead in the final round.  Els had the lead at -14 on the 16th hole. He was eying a win and more importantly the accompanying invitation to the Masters he would receive.  But two bogeys in the final two holes took away those opportunities. Els's bogeys brought the four players who were tied for 2nd at -13 into a tie for first.  Surging Luke Donald (66), Jim Furyk (69), Sang-moon Bae (68) and the big hitter Robert Garrigus (64) would end up in a four way playoff. During the four way playoff all four players hit the 18th hole in regulation. Luke Donald's 7-iron out of deep rough was the most impressive shot to the green, with only 3-4 feet left for birdie.  Bae, Furyk and Garrigus all missed their birdie putts, leaving the win open for Donald should he drain his birdie. When Donald's birdie putt did drop he not only carded the victory, be stole the #1 ranking in the world back from Rory McIlory. Shortly after Donald's win, McIlory made this comment on twitter:
"Well I enjoyed it while it lasted! Congrats LukeDonald! Impressive performance!"
Champions Tour At the Toshiba Classic in Newport Beach, California, The "Boss of the Moss" Loren Roberts won his first event in some 21 months. Though Roberts had a four shot lead in the final round, there was some stress on the back nine as he made bogeys on three of the last five holes.  Despite making the finish "interesting" he was able to pull off the two shot victory over Tom Kite, Bernhard Langer and Mark Calcavecchia. LPGA Tour #1 ranked Yani Tseng shot a 31 on the back nine of the final round of the RR Donnelly LPGA Founders Cup to record a one shot victory.  The win marks her 14th LPGA victory and put her over the $8 million mark in career earnings. The round was a bit odd, as the temperatures in Phoenix dropped and hail pelted the course.  Lightning followed and forced delays in play. In total there were three hours of delays.
