PGA Results: 2012 British Open

by Jeremiah Bohannon on Apr 22, 2012
PGA Tour Remember Ben Curtis?  Many thought he was a one hit wonder, winning the British Open back in 2003.  Two consecutive 67's at the tough playing TPC San Antonio gave Curtis a nice lead coming into the weekend.  Curtis was able to hold on with following rounds of 73 and 72 to win the Valero Texas Open by two shots over Matt Every and John Huh. Curtis made it interesting on the 17th hole in the final round though.  He bladed a wedge over the 17th green.  At that point it looked like his current one shot lead was going to disappear.  But Curtis dug deep and made a crucial 23 foot putt to save par and keep his lead going into the final hole.  With the pressure off on the 18th, Curtis recorded an exclamation point birdie for the two shot win. Despite the small hiccup on 17, Curtis was at or near the top in many statistical categories which adds up to a win. An impressive 2nd place came for John Huh, who started the tournament by going nine over par for the first eight holes.  Huh impressively played himself to the final grouping on Sunday.  That accomplishment is even more impressive when considering the fact that Huh was playing with an injured wrist which will require medical attention. Champions Tour The Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf is a two man team competition as described last week.  Super low numbers are the norm, as the best senior players in the world are teaming up in a best ball competition. The team of Michael Allen and David Frost finished one shot out of playoff last year.  Coming into the 14th hole, their team was one shot out of the lead on Sunday.  After Allen experienced a bout of weekend hacker by blowing his tee shot into the trees, chunking the 2nd and flying the green with his 3rd, David Frost took over for the team.  He helped out his struggling partner by chipping in for eagle which vaulted them to a one shot lead.  They would finish with that one shot lead at an astonishing -29 (62, 63, 62).
"We played solid golf this year. If it wasn't Michael, it was me; if it wasn't me, it was Michael. So we played some great golf at different times every day."
LPGA Tour The LPGA Tour was in Kapolei, Hawaii for the LPGA Lotte Championship at Ko Olina Golf Club.  The broadcast schedule was refreshing as the tournament aired in prime time Wednesday through Saturday this past week.  Many fans liked that. #8 ranked Ai Miyazato made her way to the top spot of the leaderboard in the 2nd round round, tied at -8 with Azahara Munoz.  By the beginning of the final round Miyazato worked her lead to three shots over Munoz and Cristie Kerr.  After making birdie on the 2nd to last hole, Miyazato's lead was four shots.  The final hole was a victory lap, capped off by a tap-in par. This victory marks the eighth in Miyazato's career and the first since the 2011 Evian Masters.
