PGA Results: 2011 World Cup, and Australian PGA
Hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend. Despite all of the black Friday hoopla, Thanksgiving festivities, college and pro football going on this weekend, there was still some good golf to watch.
Kuchar and Woodland give USA first World Cup since 2000
This weekend in Hainan, China, the OMEGA Mission Hills world Cup was contested. This is a competition pitting 28 different two man teams from 28 countries against each other.
In the Sunday final alternate shot round, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell from Ireland held a two shot lead. They could only manage an even par 72 round. They were leapfrogged (ahem) by several hot teams and finished tied for 4th.
England's duo of Ian Poulter and Justin Rose was the hottest team on Sunday. They came into the final round seemingly out of contention, but smoked a 63 in alternate shot format, an amazing feat. They vaulted themselves from a T15 position to 2nd.
Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland, two players who had never competed in the World Cup, ended the United States' World Cup drought by notching a 5 under 67 round on Sunday. That final round 67 was enough for a two shot margin of victory.
Australian PGA Championship
Meanwhile down under, Greg Chalmers claimed the Australian PGA Championship in a three man playoff with Robert Allenby and Marcus Fraser. In the playoff Fraser found a pond while Allenby's drive into the rough was too penal for him to recover and make par. Par wins it.
Bubba Watson and K.T. Kim held the lead after three rounds, but the final group struggled for a combined +9.
Perhaps the biggest news of the Australian PGA wasn't who won the event, but the fact that the tournament organizers rescinded John Daly's invitation to play in the event. The invitation was pulled because of Daly's withdrawal from the Australian Open. Daly had to WD from the event after hitting all of the golf balls in his bag into the water on the 11th hole.
