PGA Results: 2011 Champions Tour

by Jeremiah Bohannon on Aug 21, 2011
Good Monday to our fellow Frogger fans.  I hope you all had as fantastic of a weekend as I did.  Despite being the week after golf's final major on the PGA Tour, there was still some great golf to experience this past weekend. Fred Couples wins first Champions Tour major This past week Fred Couples fought off his back pain, left hip pain, body aches, and stiffening up during rain/lightning delays to capture his first ever Champions Tour major victory. The final round of the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship found Freddy in a playoff with John Cook.  Both players surprisingly made pars on the first two playoff holes, par-5's.  The third playoff hole, the par-4 17th was the deciding hole.  Couples put his approach close and made birdie, beating Cook's par. The stats tell the story for Fred's win.  He was 3rd in driving distance, 13th in putts per green in regulation and 1st in greens in regulation.  The solid putting combined with being 1st in GIR is what put him in the position to win. With the victory comes an invitation to the 2012 Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium course.  That news was a bit of a surprise to Couples:
"You might have thrown me for a loop with that one. I'll go. Yeah. That'll be very exciting. I did not know the winner got to go. That's great. I get to play with the studs, or try to. So that will be fun."
Webb Simpson records first PGA Tour win Meanwhile on the big tour, Webb Simpson recorded his first PGA Tour victory at the Wyndham Championship with a final round 67 after an opening string of eight straight pars.  Perhaps the North Carolina native had a home advantage, having even caddied at the Wyndham as a teenager for Neal Lancaster.
"I really couldn't think of a better place to win than here in Greensboro."
Simpson made birdies on the 15th and 16th holes Sunday to open up a three shot lead and cruised home from there.
"When I made the putt on 15, I asked my caddie for the first time all day, `Where do we stand?' and he said, `We're two ahead right now.' I knew I needed to play solid golf on the last three holes, and to birdie 16 was so huge. I knew I had a three-shot lead on 18, and as soon as I hit the ball in play, I knew it was probably over."
The final round 67 was crucial for Simpson, but the victory should be credited to an incredible 29 he shot in the 3rd round on the back nine.  In a five hole stretch during that nine Simpson carded four birdies an an eagle. With the victory Webb shoots up to 3rd place in the FedEx Cup standings.
