Don't come up short here![/caption]
How far do you really hit your 7-iron? Do you know what your average distance is?
Most amateur golfers come up short on their approaches but somehow fail to notice. Most amateur golfers gauge their iron shots on a 100% perfect strike. But the problem is, seldom to amateurs hit the ball 100% perfectly. Percentages will vary based on handicap and skill level, but even the best of amateurs may only hit their irons perfectly 70-80% of the time.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
The best way to calculate club yardages is to take averages over several shots, either during play or during practice.
During practice, take a specific iron and hit it 10-20 times, tracking the yardage the ball travels each time. Average all of the shots together and that’s your number. You’ll find some shots go far and some don’t. Most end up somewhere in the middle. The larger the sample of shots taken, the more accurate the yardage.
The same can be done on the course. Track your stats closely. Tally up each iron at the end of the round. For instance, lets say you hit your 8-iron five times during the round. Calculate the average yardage for the five shots and there’s your number.
On the course a few shots may go long and a few may go short. But the majority of the shots will end up the right distance.
