Golf Tips: Golf Club Bounce

by Jeremiah Bohannon on Jul 15, 2013
[caption id="attachment_4597" align="alignright" width="300"]Image courtesy Cleveland Golf Image courtesy Cleveland Golf[/caption] Do you struggle with your wedges around the greens? Do you blade a lot of chips? Hit a lot of chips fat? Have distance control issues? All these no matter what you try? Bounce There’s a property in golf clubs called “bounce.” The bounce of a golf club is measured in degrees. Wedges especially perform in various ways based on their bounce. A basic low wedge bounce would be around four degrees, while a high bounce may be 12 degrees or higher. Sand wedges tend to have a large amount of bounce so that the club does not dig into the sand. The bounce helps the club “bounce” off the sand and get through it. Players choose certain levels of bounce based on the types of swings they have or the conditions. Professional golfers often change their bounce, by changing wedges or grinding them down with a grinder, based on the conditions. If you drop-kick a lot of wedge shots, perhaps you have too much bounce. The club may be bouncing off the ground first and then hitting the ball. If you hit a lot of fat shots, where the club digs into the ground and an oversized divot is produced, perhaps you have to little bounce. Test The best way to find the right wedge bounce is to demo a few wedges of the same brand, but with different bounce. Try a 56 or 60 degree wedge with perhaps 4 degrees, 8 degrees and 10-12 degrees. Experiment with pitches, chips and sand shots using all the different wedge bounces. You may find some amazing results and have better confidence that your wedges are the right bounce for your game.
