Golf Tips: Ball Above Feet

by Jeremiah Bohannon on Jan 30, 2012
Your ball has come to rest right of the fairway, on a side hill.  When you address the ball (right handed), the ball is above your feet.  You're dreading this shot because you always seem to hit it fat and/or left.  Here's a great way to deal with that situation. Grip Down Find a piece of flat ground by the side hill and take an address stance with the club you intend to hit.  Since we will be gripping down on the real shot, one extra club may be a good choice.  Feel your upper body posture and position at address on the flat lie. Now move to the side hill lie and address the ball.  You'll feel that your posture is more upright and taller, because your arms and upper body are closer to the ground.  Move your hands down the grip of the club (grip down) until you feel your upper body and posture is in the same position as the flat lie.  Once you feel your posture is the same, you can take a normal swing and feel comfortable over the shot. Aim Right Often times the ball will travel left of target from this lie as well.  Practice on a side hill at the range and see what happens in your swing.  Note how many yards left the shot goes, if any.  When you encounter this shot on the course, pick a line right of the target that same amount of yards to compensate. Once the aim and posture adjustments are made, you'll be hitting straight shots at the pin from the dreaded "ball above the feet" lie in no time!
