While most of the top 50 players in the world are contesting the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational, the rest of the PGA Tour is in Lake Tahoe for the Reno-Tahoe Open. The fun thing about this tournament is the aggressive style of play which is influenced by the scoring system. We've talked about stableford scoring before, but this tournament's "modified stableford" format is a little different. Let's take a look.
Reno-Tahoe Modified Stableford Scoring
The Stableford scoring assigns point values for each hole based on the number of strokes taken on that hole. The modified version in use this week pushes points to the more extreme end, penalizing poor scores more and rewarding good scores more. Here's the breakdown:
Double Eagle: 8 points
Eagle: 5 points
Birdie: 2 points
Par: 0 points
Bogey: -1 point
Double bogey or worse: -3 points
With a scoring system which promotes aggressive play, it is fun to watch groups like this week's Thursday and Friday pairing of John Daly and J.B Holmes. Here's the TV schedule below. And remember when looking at the leaderboard, high scores are better.
