  • Tuesday Tip - Ball above feet

Your ball has come to rest right of the fairway, on a side hill.  When you address the ball (right handed), the ball is above your feet.  You're dreading this shot because you always seem to hit it fat and/or left.  Here's a great way to deal with that situation.

    Grip Down

Find a piece of flat ground by the side hill and take an address stance with the club you intend to hit.  Since we will be gripping down on the real shot, one extra club may be a good choice.  Feel your upper body posture and position at address on the flat lie.

Now move to the side hill lie and address the ball.  You'll feel that your posture is more upright and taller, because your arms and upper body are closer to the ground.  Move your hands down the grip of the club (grip down) until you feel your upper body and posture is in the same position as the flat lie.  Once you feel your posture is the same, you can take a normal swing and feel comfortable over the shot.

    Aim Right

Often times the ball will travel left of target from this lie as well.  Practice on a side hill at the range and see what happens in your swing.  Note how many yards left the shot goes, if any.  When you encounter this shot on the course, pick a line right of the target that same amount of yards to compensate.

Once the aim and posture adjustments are made, you'll be hitting straight shots at the pin from the dreaded "ball above the feet" lie in no time!

  • Monday Wrap

What a weekend it was in the golf world.  From a Frogger standpoint we had the PGA Merchandise Show.  We're still recovering from that long but great week.  On the pro tours we had the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, while the European Tour was in Abu Dhabi.  Phil Mickelson was in Torrey, while Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and other bigs were in Abu Dhabi.

    PGA Tour

The Farmers Insurance Open had a crazy ending.  Kyle Stanley looked to have the tournament victory in hand, with a five shot lead at the beginning of the final round.  By the final hole, he had a three stroke lead.  From the fairway, he sucked back a wedge which hit by the pin.  But it spun too much, going down the hill in front of the green and into the water.  He'd then fail to get up and down for a double bogey, which would have still won him the tournament.  The triple bogey finish forced a playoff between Stanley and Brandt Snedeker.

Both players would tie the first playoff hole, the 18th, with birdies.  On the 2nd playoff hole, the par-3 16th, Snedeker would scramble for a par while Stanley would fail to make par.

Snedeker comes back from seven shots behind Stanley to win.  An unbelievable finish.

"I know I'll be back. I'm not worried about that. It's just tough to swallow right now. I just need to be patient. One of my goals coming into this year was to just keep putting myself in position, and I'll do that." ~Kyle Stanley

Phil Mickelson by the way, failed to make the cut.

    European Tour

Tiger Woods was looking good after a 3rd round 66 in Abu Dhabi at the Abu Dhabi Championship.  He was tied for the lead coming into the final round with Englishman Robert Rock, the 117th ranked player in the world.  Most fans and media expected Tiger to win, but Robert Rock didn't.  Rock outscored Woods 70-72 in the final round and went on to win.  Rock not only held off Tiger, but a surging Rory McIlroy who leapfrogged Woods for a 2nd place finish.

"I didn't hit the ball as well as I would like to. Today I was just a touch off. I was righting the ball through the fairways. I was hitting the ball a little bit further than I thought I would. So something to look at, and something to try and figure out." ~Tiger Woods

"It's pretty hard to believe that I managed to win today. Very surprised.  played good. So I guess I had a chance from early on, a couple of birdies made the day feel a little bit easier.  But it's difficult playing with Tiger. You expect almost every shot to threaten to go in. I felt a lot of pressure and couldn't afford any lapses in concentration at all.  It doesn't get an awful lot harder than playing with Tiger Woods. So I guess barring a major championship, I know I can handle that again. So that's pretty nice to know." ~Robert Rock

  • Tuesday Tip - Set Goals

Today's Tuesday tip will be a quick one, as we at Frogger are making the trip from the west coast to the east coast and the 2012 PGA Merchandise Show.  If you're at the show, come by booth #3653 and say hello.

Now onto today's short, but very useful tip.

    Set Goals

How many times have you gone to the range and aimlessly hit ball after ball, even bucket after bucket?  How long has your handicap stayed the same?  How long has your putting been the same old same old?

It is an excellent idea to set goals regarding your golf game.  Give those formerly aimless practice sessions some purpose.  I'd break the goals into small and big goals.

Big goals would be something like decreasing your handicap from an 18 to a 9, shooting lower scores, winning the club championship etc.

Small goals will make the big goals come easy. Break up your game into some smaller categories and make some individual goals for each category.  Here are a few sample goals.

    • Improve putting distance control
    • Decrease three putts per round
    • Increase up and down percentage around the greens
    • Increase greens in regulation percentage
    • Increase driving accuracy
    • Increase driving distance
    • Improve course management
    • Eliminate blowup holes

By setting smaller, categorized goals and reaching them, the bigger goals like shooting lower scores will come automatically.

    PGA Tour

Quite a fun 3rd weekend on the PGA Tour.  This past week the Tour was in Palm Springs for the Humana Challenge (formerly the Bob Hope), playing three different courses in a low scoring shootout.  The format for the first leg of the tourney was a Pro-Am, with Bill Clinton as the host.  Clinton and his partner Greg Norman had some huge galleries.

The tournament's 3rd round was delayed when sudden 50 mile per hour winds blasted through, blowing away away tents, pavilions, scoreboards and people.  When the dust settled and the 3rd round could be completed, Mark Wilson entered the final round with a three shot lead.

Johnson Wagner, John Mallinger and Jeff Maggert surged on Sunday with rounds of 65, 66 and 64 respectively.   Big hitter Robert Garrigus was in the mix, and had a chance to win at the end despite being six over after the first eight holes on Thursday.  Garrigus was on "59 watch" in the 3rd round, but ended up shooting a 61.

In the end, Mark Wilson would hold on to win by two shots with a final round 69.  There's something about Mark Wilson and the early half of the season.

    Champions Tour

In Kaupulehu-Kona Hawaii, amongst the lava rock lined golf holes of Hualalai Resort, Dan Forsman notched his 3rd Champions Tour victory with a closing 69.

Forsman beat 2nd place finisher and suddenly surging player Jay Don Blake by two and John Cook by three.

    European Tour

23 year South African Branden Grace beat his childhood heroes, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen at the Volvo Golf Champions in George, South Africa.

In a dream finish, Grace faced Goosen and Els in a playoff.  On the first playoff hole, the par-5 18th, Grace would make birdie while Els and Goosen made par.  This victory marks the 2nd victory in as many starts for Grace.

  • Friday Fun - The Longest Yard

This is a really fun sounding game I read about recently which I definitely must try.  The game is called The Longest Yard.

The Longest Yard is a simple concept which can be used for single player or team based play.  When a player or team wins a hole, they are awarded the same number of points as there are yards in the hole.  So if player/team A wins the first hole, a 525 yard par-5, team/player A is awarded 525 points.  Player/team B wins the 2nd hole, a par-3 which is 156 yards.  They are awarded 156 points.

At the end of the round, the player/team with the most points wins the bet.

    Variations

For fun, players could add double bonus points for birdies, triple for eagles etc.  For instance, if hole #3 is won with a birdie and is 425 yards, the player/team would win 850 points.

  • Humana Challenge Preview

The PGA Tour has reached the mainland after spending the first two weeks in Hawaii.  This week the tour is in Palm Springs for the Humana Challenge.  Most people know this tournament by its old name, the Bob Hope Classic.  The tournament has been revamped with new host Bill Clinton taking the place of Bob Hope.

    In The Field

This week's field is the most start studded so far this season.  Phil Mickelson should be the favorite coming into this week, for his first start of 2012.  Phil has won this tournament twice and has won more prize money in this event than any other player.

Bomber Dustin Johnson had off season knee surgery and is said to be back to 100%.  He has the length to destroy the host courses, if he can keep it accurate enough.  Plus Johnson has reunited with his old caddy Bobby Brown.

FedEx Cup winner Bill Haas won the tournament in 2010 and should have won it in 2011 but lost in a playoff.

Another super consistent player who should have a great chance to notch a victory this week is Matt Kuchar.  This week marks Kuchar's first start in 2012.

The featured group to watch the first two days is Anthony Kim with Camilo Villegas.  Neither player has played up to his potential in the last 1-2 years though.

Greg Norman is friends with Bill Clinton and will be in the field this week.  Don't expect him to contend and I doubt he'll make the cut.

Once again our primary rookie to watch is Bud Cauley.

    Courses

The Humana Challenge is contested on THREE resort courses in the Palm Springs area.

The first and host course is the PGA West Palmer Private course, obviously designed by the King, Arnold Palmer.  Opened in 1986, the par-72 Palmer Private course sits against the Santa Rosa Mountains measures out at 6,930 yards and is rated at 74.6.  Despite the high rating, expect to see low scores.

The final par-5 finishing hole presents a chance for players to go for it in two and try to make eagle, but sand and water await poorly struck aggressive shots.

The 2nd course is La Quinta Country Club which opened in 1959.  La Quinta CC is a par-72 as well, measuring out at 7,060 yards for the tournament.  This course is probably a bit tougher than the Palmer, lined with mature palm and many other kinds of trees such as banana and olive trees.

Last but not least in the course rotation is the Nicklaus Private Course.  The Nicklaus course has been in the rotation of this tournament since 2009.  This desert target style course can have some teeth to it, with a slope rating of 146.  If you're not familiar with slope rating, that is quite a high number.  The course tips out at 6,951 yards and has a stroke average of 74.3.

    PINK Amphibian Towel

A year after the BrushPro won the PGA Show's best product, amazingly the Amphibian Towel won the 2009 Best New Product award.  What a run for us here at Frogger and we're very proud.  The Amphibian Towel is a golf towel that stays wet on the inside layer and dry on the outside (reverse the two in the rain).  The new pink version of the Amphibian Towel looks fantastic!
